Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD)

Alberta funding and services that help families raising a child under 18 with a disability — explained in plain language.

FSCD is a Government of Alberta program for families raising a child under 18 who has a disability. Working with a Disability Services worker, your family gets an FSCD agreement that provides funding and services built around your child’s needs — supporting your child’s development, helping with the extra costs of a disability, and giving caregivers a break through respite.

Who can apply

  • You are the guardian of a child under 18 who lives in Alberta.
  • Your child is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Your child has a chronic developmental, physical, sensory, mental or neurological condition, confirmed by medical documentation (or is awaiting a diagnosis).
  • The condition significantly limits everyday activities like eating, dressing, communicating or playing.

What FSCD can help with

  • Respite — a break for caregivers, in or out of your home.
  • Child care and out-of-school care related to the disability.
  • Community and personal supports, such as a support worker or aide.
  • Specialized & professional services — behavioural consultation, counselling, and clinical supports.
  • Some disability-related costs, and family support and counselling.

What it costs you

  • Family support, respite and most services are not income-tested.
  • Some specialized services are cost-shared based on your family’s income.

How to apply

  1. Apply online through the FSCD Intake app at fscd.alberta.ca — or call Alberta Supports for help.
  2. A Disability Services worker reviews your application and contacts you to discuss next steps.
  3. Together you sign an FSCD agreement setting out your supports and funding.
  4. Access services — Transitions delivers many FSCD-funded supports.
