Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH)
Alberta’s monthly income and health benefits for adults with a severe, permanent disability — explained in plain language.
AISH is a Government of Alberta program that provides a monthly living allowance, along with health and other benefits, to adults with a permanent medical condition that substantially limits their ability to earn a living. Unlike FSCD and PDD, AISH is an income-support program — it helps with everyday living costs.
New for 2026
On July 1, 2026, Alberta introduced the Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP) for people with severe disabilities who are able to work (up to $1,740/month). One Disability Income Assistance application now streams you to AISH (if your disability prevents work) or ADAP. Many existing AISH clients — including people with developmental disabilities — stay on AISH.
Who can apply
- You are 18 or older and not yet receiving Old Age Security.
- You live in Alberta and are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- You have a severe, permanent medical condition that substantially limits your ability to earn a living, with treatment options tried.
- You meet the financial criteria (see below).
What AISH provides
- A monthly living allowance — up to $1,940 (2026 rate, indexed each year).
- Health benefits — prescriptions, dental, optical, diabetic and other supplies, and emergency ambulance.
- A child benefit for each dependent child.
- Personal benefits for special or one-time needs.
Financial eligibility
- Your non-exempt assets must stay under $100,000 — your home and one vehicle don’t count.
- Your income — and a spouse or partner’s — affects the amount you receive.
How to apply
- Apply through Alberta Supports (1-877-644-9992) or online, under Disability Income Assistance.
- Provide medical and financial information to support your application.
- You’re assessed for AISH or the new ADAP stream.
- If approved, your benefits and health coverage begin.
